The heart generates a powerful electromagnetic field with each beat, created by the flow of electrical currents as heart muscle cells depolarize, a field strong enough to extend outside the body by several feet. It influences the brain and nervous system, acting as a synchronizing signal for the entire body, with research suggesting it carries strong emotional information.

How to Exercises | Harnessing Heart Power
A first step for increasing mental clarity and emotional stability is through a simple technique called Heart-Focused Breathing™. This is also the first step of most HeartMath techniques, as it helps balance the nervous system, which increases our effectiveness in managing reactive or scattered thoughts and feelings that drain our system. Instead, we quickly become more centered and at ease.
Focus on Your Heart: Place your attention on your heart or the center of your chest. It helps to place one hand over your heart and the other just beneath on your diaphragm or solar plexus area.
Breathe Deeply and Slowly: Imagine your breath flowing in and out of your heart area. Find an easy rhythm that’s comfortable. Some people practice inhaling for 5 or 6 seconds and exhaling for the same amount of time. Do this for a few minutes and note how you feel.
Visualization: Imagine that your heart has a blowhole, like a dolphin, and the air enters through your heart. As you inhale, imagine your chest expanding, your heart growing larger. Now imagine a warm pink light filling your entire chest and body. Feel yourself getting calmer and in your mind's eye visualize your heart and brain connected with this pink light and the field around you getting bigger.
When you gently close your eyes and slow your breath, you begin to bring the heart and brain into coherence. As the nervous system settles, brain activity naturally shifts from high-beta survival states into alpha, and often into theta. Alpha acts as the gateway, while theta is the state in which deep subconscious learning and integration occur. In this coherent state, the analytical, self-protective mind softens—the part that doubts, overanalyzes, and resists—allowing access to the body’s deeper regulatory and emotional systems. Here, the heart’s rhythmic signals synchronize with the brain, creating optimal conditions for change. New neural pathways are formed, old patterns can be updated, and a new sense of identity can be embodied. When a clear intention is paired with an elevated emotional state, the heart–brain system generates a coherent electromagnetic signal—organized, stable, and influential—supporting lasting internal change and alignment.
When the parasympathetic and the sympathetic system are out of sync from emotions such as anger, anxiety, or frustration, this produces an erratic rhythm or incoherent state. The brain receives this input which affects whether higher cognitive functions can be accessed to self-regulate.
Positive emotions such as compassion and love generate a harmonious pattern in the heart’s rhythm, leading to coherence and greater emotional regulation. When harmonious interactions exist among the body’s systems, this is referred to as physiological coherence. As this increases, so does the brain’s alpha activity, which supports stress relief and creativity.

Practice Several Times/Day: Engage in Heart-Focused Breathing several times a day, especially when you feel frustration or anxiety rising.
Ask Yourself Key Questions: Once you feel more balanced, ask yourself, "Do I really want to expend my energy on this?" and "What if there’s more to the situation than I can see right now?" This helps you bring your nervous system to a more neutral state.
Engage a Positive or Uplifting Feeling: While doing Heart-Focused Breathing, imagine you’re breathing in a feeling of calm, kindness, gratitude, or another positive attitude. Doing this helps to synchronize your heart and brain rhythms, which increases clarity and a sense of well-being.
Connect with Your Intuition: As you sincerely practice these HeartMath steps to clear your mind and regain balance, it helps you connect to your heart’s intuitive guidance. Listen for any inner direction that feels good to your heart.
