Reduce Anxiety & Need for Control: Embrace Uncertainty, Change, and Growth

“In our modern world of unprecedented technological and scientific advancements, the idea that questions may remain unanswered is unsettling. This discomfort stems from our psychological need for control - a fundamental aspect of human nature that provides security and stability. The more we attempt to control the uncontrollable, the more aware we become of our limitations. This paradox often leads to increased frustration and dissatisfaction." - Sam Goldstein, Ph.D.
The very nature of change is uncertain, and that uncertainty makes a lot of people uncomfortable. When change occurs, it often comes with an element of not knowing what the outcome will be, which can lead to feelings of unease, anxiety, and discomfort. Change is inherently unpredictable and makes people feel uneasy due to the lack of certainty about what lies ahead.
People often conflate safety with familiarity, but they are not the same thing. Our brains love what's familiar because it's predictable and presents a veiled sense of control. At our core, we are biologically wired for survival, like every other species on the planet. Simply put, survival is hinged on SAFETY - that means shelter, access to resources, and connection in relationship/belonging in community (think herds or flocks - safety in numbers) to reduce vulnerability to potential threats. Attempting to control our environment or predict the future gives us the illusion of safety, but we know that can only go so far. It can become an exhausting game of "whack-a-mole" that keeps us in a constant state of stress and fear.
FEAR + AVOIDANCE = ANXIETY
Every time we avoid discomfort, we send ourselves the message that we can't handle it. This actually creates a conditioned sense of learned helplessness and a self-fulfilling prophecy. Avoidance leads to more fear, more uncertainty, and more anxiety. Breaking the vicious cycle of anxiety starts by taking a small opposite action to build confidence in your capacity to be ok, no matter what. Taking the power away from that which we fear starts with a small step. Allowing fear to govern and dictate choices is self-limiting and maladaptive. Healthy and strong decision-making comes from our intuitive knowing, our self-awareness, available information, and alignment with our core beliefs and values.
Struggle is Necessary for Growth
Struggle is considered necessary for growth because it pushes us outside our comfort zones. Challenges force us to develop new skills, build resilience, and learn from challenges, ultimately leading to personal development and a stronger sense of accomplishment when we overcome those obstacles. Without struggle, we wouldn't have the motivation to improve or adapt to new situations.
Develops resilience: Facing challenges and overcoming them builds mental and emotional toughness, allowing us to bounce back from setbacks more effectively.
Promotes problem-solving skills: When struggling, we are forced to analyze situations, identify solutions, and refine our approaches, improving our problem-solving abilities.
Fosters a growth mindset: Embracing challenges and seeing struggles as opportunities for learning encourages a positive attitude towards growth and development.
Boosts confidence: Successfully navigating through difficult situations can significantly increase self-esteem and belief in our capabilities.
Identifies areas for improvement: Struggles can highlight aspects of our lives that need attention or development, prompting us to focus on improvement.
Steps to Managing Uncertainty, Anxiety, and Control
Mindfulness and Meditation: Practicing mindfulness and meditation creates an internal resting state of regulated calm and peace. These are evidence-based tools that provide a balanced, present-focused perspective, help us maintain a calm internal environment, and build capacity and resilience in our nervous system to respond to uncertainty calmly and thoughtfully.
Embrace uncertainty. Change disrupts the familiar, leaving people without a clear picture of what to expect, causing anxiety about potential negative outcomes. Mentally accepting life’s unpredictability prepares us to expect it, and that alone can liberate us from the struggle to impose control.
Foster authentic connections: We are not meant to live life alone. Isolation is incredibly detrimental to our mental and behavioral health. We are looking to foster connections that are safe, reliable, and consistent. Less separation, more oneness and wholeness. Sharing your fears can help alleviate the burden of uncertainty.
Focus your energy on what is within your control and let go of what is not. Your power lies in choosing your response, not controlling the actions of others. Trying to influence what is outside of your control will inherently create feelings of powerlessness. Focusing on what you can control means directing your attention and energy toward aspects of your life where you have influence and can make positive changes. This is your internal landscape and includes thoughts, feelings, actions, attitude, and efforts, rather than dwelling on uncontrollable external events or other people's behavior. By understanding the difference between what you can and cannot control, you can better manage your emotions, reduce stress, and take proactive steps to improve your life.
Develop Healthy Coping Mechanisms: It’s normal to experience some fear and discomfort in life. You can learn tools and skills to manage anxiety and develop resilience.
Maintain a simple schedule: Structuring your day with reliable and predictable times and activities helps mitigate
Increase Distress Tolerance: Stepping outside of one's comfort zone, which is required with change, can lead to feelings of stress, unease, and even fear. Therefore, we work on increasing distress tolerance internally so that when those feelings arise, we have coping skills in which to deal with the distress and it doesn't push us into emotional activation or shut down. We are learning to become comfortable with discomfort!
Adaptability, Flexibility, Resilience, Capacity: To navigate change effectively, individuals need to develop adaptability, flexibility, resilience, and capacity to face life's challenges and accept life on life's terms!
